Abstract:
The study conducted is titled: Gender Equality and Household Livelihoods in Kigali City, Rwanda. A case of Gisozi Sector. The study objectives were: to find out the citizens’ perceptions on gender equality in Gisozi Sector, to analyze gender equality factors that enhance household livelihood in Gisozi Sector,to identify gender equality related challenges that have an effect on household’s livelihood in Gisozi Sector, and to propose effective measures to improve households’ gender dynamics for better livelihood. The study employed the mixture of qualitative and quantitative research design and data were collected using documentary, interview and questionnaire. Thematic analysis and SPSS were used in data analysis. The study finds that on the perception of gender equality, men and women have an equal right and have an equal economic opportunities. the study also finds, access to education, land and property rights, and promotion of gender-based policies and programs are the factors that enhance household in Gisozi. The study finds the challenges that have an effects on household’s livelihoods in Gisozi sector such as unequal distribution of household chores and gender-based violence. The study recommends that education and raising awareness should be the focus, and also the women participation on the decision making in the household matter could be strengthened.
