This dissertation examines the impact of urbanization on socio-economic development in
Rwanda, with a particular focus on Kamonyi District from 2020 to 2024. Urbanization is a
critical phenomenon that influences various aspects of development, including economic growth,
social dynamics, and environmental sustainability. As Rwanda continues to experience rapid
urbanization, understanding its implications becomes essential for effective policy formulation
12
and implementation. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data
analysis with qualitative insights gathered from key informant interviews and community
surveys. The research identifies key drivers of urbanization in Kamonyi District, including
population growth, migration patterns, and government policies aimed at promoting urban
development. It further explores the socio-economic outcomes of urbanization, such as changes
in employment opportunities, access to education and healthcare, and the overall quality of life
for residents. Findings indicate that while urbanization has led to significant economic
opportunities and improved infrastructure in Kamonyi District, it has also exacerbated challenges
such as income inequality, inadequate housing, and environmental degradation. The study
highlights the need for sustainable urban planning that addresses these disparities and promotes
inclusive growth. The dissertation concludes with recommendations for policymakers,
emphasizing the importance of integrating sustainable practices into urban development
strategies. By fostering a holistic approach to urbanization, Rwanda can harness its potential for
socio-economic development while mitigating adverse effects on its communities and
environment. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge on urbanization and
development in Rwanda and provides a framework for future studies in similar contexts. |
