The Impacts of Mining activities on Youth development in Rwanda.Case of Rutongo Mines Ltd Ngoma Sector in Rulindo District (2019-2023)

Abstract

Mining impacts to youth development. Using the Rutongo mining firm in the Rulindo District as a case study, this study sought to evaluate the effects of mining operations on youth development. The researcher employed both qualitative and quantitative approach of research design. The secondary data concerned youth development that was documented as a consequence of mining operations. The primary data came from 83 young miners who worked in and around mining locations. A standardized questionnaire was used to analyze these respondents, who were chosen at purposively sampling. Utilizing statistical analysis, these results were presented in pertinent tables. The results of study indicated mining activities enhance socioeconomic well-being of youth by providing employment opportunities, increasing business, promoting infrastructure development, improve education quality as well as financial services delivery where 100% 0f respondents strongly agree that Rutongo mining activities provided employment opportunities to the youth while 79.5% of respondent strongly agree that mining activities promoted infrastructures development. The findings also showed challenges faced by youth exposed in mining activities such as eye irritation, skin irritation, respiratory diseases and injuries. The current study provided recommendation addressed to decision-makers where for early protection and accident mitigation from mining-related incidents, mining policy regulators and inspectors should strengthen the social protection programs already in place, such as insurance supply.
