Abstract:
The study assessed the role of diplomacy on the socio-economic development of South
Sudan, a case study of Central Equatoria Region. Specifically, the study; identified the actors
of diplomacy for development in Central Equatoria region, and examined the relationship
between diplomacy and development of Central Equatoria region, South Sudan. The study
design employed for was a qualitative documentary review approach. The documentary
review method was used to collecting data from existing documents and reports. The
reviewed documents indicate that diplomacy plays a crucial role in shaping the socio-political
landscape of Central Equatoria region, South Sudan. They highlight various aspects such as
peacekeeping efforts by international bodies, regional mediation initiatives, economic
assessments influenced by foreign relations, humanitarian access facilitated through
diplomacy, governmental strategies for international engagement, academic analyses
contributing to policy discussions, and bilateral agreements promoting cooperation. It is
concluded that the role on diplomacy on development of Central Equatoria is characterized
by collaborative efforts among various international organizations aiming at fostering peace
co-existence while addressing socio-economic challenges faced by communities affected by
conflict. Through negotiation processes facilitated by entities like UNMISS, AU, IGAD
alongside socio-economic developmental initiatives spearheaded by organizations such as the
World Bank and UNDP—there emerges a comprehensive framework where diplomacy
serves not only as a tool for resolving conflicts but also as an enabler of sustainable
development. The study recommends that diplomacy should focus on enhancing partnerships
with neighboring countries and regional organizations such as the IGAD, and AU, among
others. Collaborative initiatives can address cross-border issues like trade, security, and
refugee management, fostering stability and economic growth in Central Equatoria.
Diplomats should advocate for targeted investments in infrastructure, education, and
healthcare within Central Equatoria to improve living conditions and stimulate economic
activity.
