Gicumbi Project in Byumba Sector. The study objectives are To analyze the sustainable
agricultural practices adopted under the Green Gicumbi Project in Byumba Sector, to examine
the factors influencing the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices in relation to
biodiversity conservation and soil health improvement in Byumba Sector, and to assess the
contribution of sustainable agricultural practices implemented by the Green Gicumbi Project to
the socio-economic development of farmers in Byumba Sector. Additionally, other objectives of
the study are to analyze the contribution of adopting sustainable agricultural practices to the
climate change mitigation in Byumba Sector through the Green Gicumbi Project and to identify
the challenges encountered in the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices under the Green
Gicumbi Project in Byumba Sector. Employing a descriptive design with simple random and
purposive sampling, data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation,
and analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Findings reveal that practices
such as organic fertilizers, crop rotation, conservation tillage, and community-based initiatives
are widely adopted, significantly enhancing soil health and biodiversity. These practices also
improve crop yield, reduce costs, and promote food security. However, challenges such as
limited resources, lack of awareness, inadequate infrastructure, and climate variability impede
adoption. For addressing these challenges, there is a need of improving resource access,
increasing education and awareness, investing in infrastructure, developing climate-resilient
practices, and promoting community conservation initiatives. |
