YOUTH OPINIONS ON HUMAN SECURITY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN CITY OF KIGALI A CASE STUDY OF GASABO DISTRICT (2017 - 2024)

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate youth perceptions of human security and assess the effectiveness of existing policies and strategies in enhancing human security outcomes. The study also explores the synergies and trade-offs between human security and sustainable development and identifies the challenges faced. Employing a descriptive research design, the study targeted a population of 27,631 youth, using the Yamane formula the sample size of 100 was determined and employing purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and documentation, with descriptive statistical analysis applied. Findings reveal that youth in Gisozi Sector feel financially stable, benefit from community support, and trust the legal system. Policies such as Imihigo, Girinka, and Vision 2020 Umurenge Program contribute positively to human security. The study highlights the need to balance economic growth with environmental conservation, address social inequalities, and improve access to education and healthcare. Challenges include limited access to basic services, inadequate infrastructure, and corruption. Recommendations for the Gisozi Sector include enhancing access to basic services and infrastructure, strengthening anti-corruption measures, promoting inclusive community participation, and improving disaster preparedness and environmental conservation
