Abstract:
This study aims to assess the main causes of poverty in Mugombwa, assess the contribution of unconditional cash transfers (UCTs) by GiveDirectly to the socioeconomic development, and examine the obstacles faced by residents in operationalizing these unconditional cash transfers. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research analyzed data collected from 323 unconditional cash transfers beneficiaries selected from a population of 1,671, using questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The main findings reveal that primary causes of poverty include lack of quality education, insufficient healthcare, limited employment opportunities, and inadequate financial services, among others. The study also identifies several contributions of UCTs, such as improved household income, enhanced food security, increased access to healthcare, and better housing conditions. However, obstacles persist, including lack of feasible financial plans, cultural beliefs, accessibility challenges, and distrust in external organizations. Based on these findings, the study recommends enhancing community education, improving infrastructure and accessibility, and strengthening support networks to maximize the effectiveness of UCT programs in alleviating poverty.
