IMPACT OF POPULATION GROWTH ON SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN KADUNA STATE. CASE STUDY: KADUNA NORTH CITY PERIOD: 2015-2024

Abstract

The study is about population growth to the socio-economic development of Kaduna. A case of Kaduna North City within the period of 2015-2024. The main purpose was to investigate the impact of population growth to the socio-economic development of Kaduna North City. Specifically the study identified the cause of high rate of the population growth in Kaduna North city; examined the impact of high rate of the population growth on the socio-economic development of Kaduna North City and proposed solution on how negative impact of population growth on the socio-economic development of Kaduna North City would be handled. Moreover the research methodology was used in the study in order to get necessary data and information for the analysis and eventual discussion of the findings. Various methods and techniques have used were analytical method, statistical, historical method and comparative method. Techniques used were documentary, interview and questionnaires Technique. Regarding the cause of high rate of the population growth in Kaduna North City results shows that there are many cause of high rate of the population growth in Kaduna City where the majority of respondents representing 54.8% strongly agreed that the in Kaduna North City traditions and cultural beliefs is the main cause of high rapid in population growth. It was also observed that all respondents with 83.9% strongly agreed that improvement in public health discouraged mortality and encouraged birth in Kaduna state. Regarding proposed solution against negative impact of population growth on the socio-economic development of Kaduna North City would be handled, the majority of respondents with 68.3% strongly agreed that Kaduna North city established clear environmental protection policies to overcome a strain on natural resources and the environment caused by high population growth. It was also observed that 46.3% of the total respondents agreed that Kaduna North City initiated some home grown solution to discourage high increase in social expenditure caused by high population growth, 19.5% strongly agreed with this statement. Therefore this allowed researcher to conclude that despite of the main cause of rapid in population growth in Kaduna North City and its negative effect to the socio-economic development in this state, employed strategies was found to be useful. But the government of Kaduna North City has to keep it eyes on it and update strategies accordingly.
