Abstract:
The study is about the role of united nation in mediating violent conflict. A case of Upper Nile.
Within the period of 2011-2024. Specifically this study examined mediating mission process in
South Sudan (Upper Nile); analyzed the role has United Nations played in mediating violent
conflict in Upper Nile and analyzed the challenges of United Nations mediation mission in
Upper Nile. After observing all findings what researcher can note here is United Nations pass
through a long process while mediating violent conflict in Upper Nile. This is proved by
respondents where the majority of respondents with 70% agreed that together with involved
parties in South Sudan UN underlies their needs and desires and 30% strongly agreed with this. it
was also observed that almost all respondents representing 85% strongly agreed that United
nation assisted involved parties to brainstorm various contents of the agreement. Regarding role
has United Nations played in mediating violent conflict in Upper Nile, results shows that with
68% strongly agreed that United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) organized a
dialogue between the representative of antagonistic parties on the impact of violence action and
32% agreed with this statement. On the issues of the challenges of United Nations mediation
mission in Upper Nile results shows that 45% of the total respondents strongly agreed that lack
of integrity by the tribes‟ chiefs is a challenge to the United Nations mediation mission in Upper
Nile35% agreed with this statement. it was also mentioned that 40% of the total respondents
strongly agreed that Lack of political will to solve the violence conflict is a challenge to the UN
mediation mission in Upper Nile and 32% agreed with this statement. The results show that
despite of some challenges like lack of integrity by the tribes chiefs , Lack of political will to
solve the violence conflict and feelings of revenge and painful memories United Nations
mediation played a considerable role where it organized a dialogue between the representative of
antagonistic parties on the impact of violence action. it also performed this mission by helping
the antagonistic parties to sit together and find the solution of existing problem instead of
violating the right of each other. On the other side in partnership with civil society and religious
movement UN organized seminaries to enhance peace and reconciliation between antagonistic
parties. Therefore, all these allow researcher to confirm that United Nation played a significant
role in mediating violent conflict parties.
