Abstract:
This study investigates the Rwanda Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (RDRC) and
its influence on the socio-economic development of ex-armed group members in Gasabo District.
The study guided by the specific objectives: the strategies and programs adopted by the Rwanda
Demobilization and Reintegration Commission in Gasabo District, the RDRC programs
contribution to the reintegration of ex-armed group members into civilian life in Gasabo District,
the contribution of the Rwanda Demobilization and Reintegration Commission to the socio-
economic development of ex-armed group members in Gasabo District, and lastly the study aims
to identify the Policy Intervention to Improve the Wellbeing of the Ex-armed group members in
Gasabo District. A mixed-methods design was employed, targeting 33 ex-armed group members
to meet the study’s objectives. In collecting the data, questionnaire, interview and documentation
were employed while in analyzing the data thematic and descriptive statistical analysis were used.
The findings reveal that RDRC programs, including vocational training, financial assistance,
psycho-social support, education, and healthcare services, significantly enhance employability,
economic independence, mental health, academic qualifications, and overall health. However,
challenges persist in housing support and comprehensive health services. Recommendations
include expanding vocational training, increasing financial support, enhancing psycho-social
services, improving housing stability, and developing a comprehensive monitoring system.
